Growing Together: A Teen’s Perspective on Family

At the heart of every successful community program is the lived experience of its participants. For many teens in our area, Family Service of Roanoke Valley’s Youth Development Program has become more than just an after-school activity—it’s a place for growth, connection, and meaningful discovery.

One participant at the West End Center, Adrianna, shared:

“I’ve grown up alongside so many of the people in this program, and being part of the Youth Development Program has truly been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much more than I ever expected—especially when it comes to relationships. Whether it’s understanding friendships or figuring out what I value in a partner, the guidance has been eye-opening. I’ve also really enjoyed the community service projects. Being able to give back while learning and growing has made the whole experience so meaningful. I’ve loved every part of it!”

This kind of reflection speaks volumes. Youth Development utilizes the Teen Outreach Program (TOP•) which is more than just structured lessons—it’s about real-life application. Through interactive sessions on life skills, emotional wellness, and healthy relationships, teens gain tools they’ll carry for life. Also, with hands-on community service projects, they learn the power of giving back while building a sense of purpose and belonging.

For many, Youth Development becomes a second home—a space where they feel heard, supported, and empowered.

We’re incredibly proud of the growth we see in our teens every day, and testimonials like this remind us why programs like this matter. As we continue to build strong futures, we invite more families and supporters to join us in making that difference.
