The most recent Carilion Community Health Needs Assessment identified mental health care as one of the top challenges in our area. The crisis is the driving force behind our plans to innovate and grow our services to meet the needs of our community.
In 2023, Roanoke had and alarming non-fatal overdose rate – the second highest it in the nation (per capita) and was 4x higher than the state average for the total overdoses.
A frightening increase in homicides – 13 in 2019 to 31 in 2023.
A 400% increase in calls to local domestic crisis hotlines.
We serve more than 2,000 individuals annually.

WHAT WE DO:
- Mental Health Counselors provide trauma-informed therapy for all ages beginning at age two.
- Youth Development Specialists work with more than 800 students, elementary – high school age to promote social and emotional skill development.
- Guardian Representatives serve as legal guardians for 100 individuals to ensure incapacitated adults live their best lives.
- Healthy Relationship Facilitators provide group education and intervention for those who have a history of using violence with their partners.
- Personal Affairs Managers oversee the personal finances for 300 individuals to ensure financial stability and prevent homelessness.

Each resident has access to top-quality mental health professionals during the most challenging seasons of life.
Students have access to mental health professionals and advocates who help them set healthy, positive goals and make plans to achieve them.
Adults court-ordered to have a Public Guardian will have their needs met and enjoy their best life.
FSRV MAKES AN IMPACT:
98% of teens in Positive Youth Development feel more hopeful about their future after participating in the program.
90% of Counseling Clients make progress on at least one treatment goal per quarter.
