Looking Ahead:  Youth Development (YD) Participants Envision Their Futures with Support from Family Service of Roanoke Valley YD Leadership

Recently, our Youth Development Program hosted an inspiring activity that encouraged middle school participants to imagine their futures; and dream boldly.

The activity invited students to envision themselves ten years from now, responding to a creative prompt: “Create an Instagram profile to share who you are at your 10th high school reunion.” With that challenge, students reflected on their future lives, highlighting:

  • Education and training
  • Career and work
  • Home and living situation
  • Friends and family
  • Hobbies and interests

Their responses were filled with ambition, creativity, and confidence. Some envisioned themselves as social workers, real estate agents, or small business marketers. Others dreamed of graduating from Harvard or a college in Virginia Beach with business degrees. They imagined living in city homes, staying close to family, and excelling in activities like tennis and swimming.

Another powerful part of the exercise asked students to consider: “Who helped you achieve your goals?” The answers ranged from the empowering—“me, myself, and I”—to the heartfelt—“my mom.”

Led by our talented Youth Development Specialist, Kayla, the session provided more than just a space to daydream—it offered students the opportunity to think critically about the paths they can take, and the people and values that will help them get there.

This activity reminded us of the importance of giving young people the tools and support they need to envision and create their own success.
