Mental Health Warrior: Star Mays

When you support a cause, you aren’t always aware of the background work needed to keep the cause alive. People like Star Mays do the behind-the-scenes work to help keep Family Service in the business of restoring hope.

As a Human Resources (HR) and Administrative Specialist, Star gracefully handles payroll and all other benefits for her coworkers. She lets us know how our benefits can work for us and makes sure our work-iversaries are always celebrated.

Star has a long history of working with nonprofits, making sure that payroll and HR tasks don’t hold them back from making an impact. She says, “I’ve always wanted to be a part of an organization that has values and a mission that will help my community.”

Star describes herself as friendly, approachable and organized. When she isn’t helping her two children get ready to go off to college (Radford University and Virginia Military Institute), she’s hanging out with her chickens and foster dogs. Her favorite quote comes from Theodore Roosevelt:

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
