Community Counseling Spotlight: Crystal Balzer

Crystal Balzer loves working with families. Absolutely loves it. That’s why she thoroughly enjoys being a Community Mental Health Counselor with Family Service doing Parent Aid, Day Treatment, and Community Counseling. The excitement bubbles through her whole body when she is out working in the valley.

With an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from Virginia Western, Crystal started her career as a preschool teacher. This experience only affirmed her goal of wanting to be a social worker to help children and families. She officially earned her Bachelors in Social Work in May 2017. Somehow in the middle of all of that (and between binge watching TLC), she became a certified Qualified Mental Health Professional for Children (QMHP-C) too.

Crystal believes in living in the small moments, like when a client reaches out to her for help. The whole interaction may take just a few seconds, but the implications are huge.

“It takes a strong person to seek help and when they trust you enough to rely on you, you know you’ve earned their trust.”

When not out and about in the community, Crystal loves hanging out with her kids. She enjoys watching them play the sports they love. Her son plays hockey and lacrosse. Her daughter plays lacrosse and cheers. She absolutely loves watching their personalities shine on the field.
