Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Family Service currently offers two DBT programs - one for adults and another for adolescents. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, for the chronically self-harming individual. Since its inception, DBT has been used to treat clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, and adapted for other difficult-to-treat disorders including dual-diagnoses. This comprehensive program includes a clinical team, skills class, individual therapy and phone "coaching". Balancing acceptance and change strategies, DBT calls on the patient and the therapist to accept reality while maintaining a strong and conscious commitment to change.
The DBT adolescent group is for suicidal/parasuicidal adolescents and a parent or guardian. This Multi-Family Skills Group is an open 16-week group that teaches DBT skills alongside a module called "Walking the Middle Path", which directly addresses the relationship between the adolescent and the adult.
